Top 10 Tips for Preparing for Your Portrait Session

Portrait Session

Hey there! So, you’ve booked your portrait session—how exciting! Whether it’s your first photoshoot or you’re a camera ready pro, getting in front of the camera can feel a little nerve-wracking (I know). But don’t worry, I’ve got your back. Here are my top 10 tips to help you prepare, feel confident, and totally rock your portrait photoshoot.

1. Communicate with Your Photographer

One of the best ways to ensure your photos turn out amazing is by chatting with your photographer ahead of time. Share your vision! You might want a bunch of professional headshots or fun, candid portraits, the more your photographer knows, the better they can tailor the session to you. Don’t be afraid to talk about your favorite angles, your style, or even a theme you have in mind! I LOVE hearing what my clients have in mind. At the end of the day, these photos are for you and you only!

2. Plan Your Wardrobe Ahead of Time

Choosing the right outfit is key to feeling confident. Start planning a few days before your shoot to avoid any last-minute panic. Wear something that makes you feel amazing, and try to avoid loud patterns or logos that can distract from your beautiful face. If you’re unsure, solid colours work wonders, and you can always bring a couple of options to mix it up! Don’t be afraid to pack your suitcase.

3. Get Your Beauty Sleep

This one’s simple but super important. A good night’s sleep can make a world of difference in how you look and feel. It’s all about looking fresh and feeling energised during your session. Plus, your skin will thank you for it!

4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Drinking plenty of water the day before and the day of your shoot is a game-changer. Hydrated skin has that natural glow, and you’ll feel more refreshed overall. Plus, water helps reduce puffiness, which is great for those early morning sessions.

5. Consider Hair and Makeup

You don’t have to go all out, but a little hair and makeup prep can elevate your look. You can either do it yourself or book one of our professional stylists—whatever makes you feel fabulous! If you’re going for a more natural look, just remember to bring some basic makeup for touch-ups during the shoot.

6. Bring Props or Personal Items

Props can add a fun or meaningful twist to your photos. Think about bringing a favorite hat, a special piece of jewelry, or even items related to your hobby or profession. Not only does it add personality to your photos, but it can also help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera.

7. Practice Makes Perfect

This may sound silly, but practicing your poses and facial expressions in the mirror can really help! Find out which angles and expressions you like best. That way, when you’re in front of the camera, you’ll know exactly what feels natural for you.

8. Relax and Trust Your Photographer (ME)

It’s normal to feel a little nervous, but remember, I’m here to guide you. Let go of any worries about looking perfect— I will help you find the best poses and lighting to showcase your unique beauty. Trust the process, and let yourself have fun!

9. Bring Some Tunes!

Music can do wonders to set the mood and help you relax. During my sessions, I like to play some tunes that make you feel comfortable. Whether it’s soft background music or your favorite upbeat playlist, it’ll help you loosen up and enjoy the session.

10. Arrive Early and Take a Moment

Give yourself some extra time to arrive at the location or studio so you’re not rushed. This will give you a few minutes to settle in, adjust your outfit, and breathe before we start. Feeling relaxed from the get-go makes for the best photos!

And there you have it—my top 10 tips to ensure you’re 100% ready for your portrait photoshoot. Remember, this experience is all about capturing you—your confidence, your style, and your story. So, take a deep breath, relax, and let your inner light shine!

See you in front of the camera! 😊
